The VSS requestor is a component that freezes data for capture. Practically, VSS does not create a copy of data, it rather saves the current data state and makes sure this state is consistent within a point in time.īasically, VSS orchestrates the smooth collaboration of the service itself and three supplementary components – VSS requestor, VSS provider and VSS writer. It coordinates the whole process of taking data copy in a consistent manner and at the same time making sure that applications stay online. Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) is a Windows service, which was introduced in Windows Server 2003 in order to provide administrators backup transaction consistency. And when we talk about an application-consistent backup, we’re talking about VSS.
The most common approach for protecting data is backup.
So, what’s so special about Hyper-V data protection? And one of the most important advantages of virtualization is how more convenient it is to protect your data. That said, it was invented with the purpose of using IT resources more effectively than before. It’s not a secret that virtualization has brought a lot of changes into the IT world.
I will also define what’s backup in relation to snapshot, what is replica, and why it’s efficient to use them in combination.
However it’s not recommended to use snapshots as a primary data protection method, and I am going to briefly explain why and for what purposes snapshots were initially designed. In this article, I am going to discuss what is Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and virtual machine (VM) snapshot, and how they can make Hyper-V data protection more reliable.
